10 Things Every Accountant Needs to Know

It’s been a while since I wrote one of these ‘A-ha moments’ pieces and as a result there are 10 bullets here for you this week. So, in time honoured tradition, tell me if you agree or disagree with the following statements.

1.    Friendships last longer than business relationships in general. If you’re in business with a friend and it’s not going well, sacrifice the business relationship to maintain the personal friendship.

2.    When making a tough decision, ask yourself, ‘what would the wisest version of me decide to do here?’ Then do that.

3.    Recurring fees for accountants is the best anti-growth strategy on the market.

4.    It’s very hard to grow your organisation without leveraging debt but it’s also much harder to sleep when in debt too.

5.    Every time you read copy which begins ‘In today’s fast paced, hyperconnected world’ you can be sure that you don’t need whatever you’re about to be sold.

6.    You need to implement less than 5% of what you learn at conferences to receive at least 4x ROI in the following 12 months.

7.    Intellectual property makes you singular, makes you unique. If you’re swimming in a pool where you’re viewed as the same as your competitors, develop something that is uniquely yours.

8.    If you’re ever involved in public speaking, remember that your audience will forget almost everything about you, except how they felt while you were in the room.

9.    There’s always going to be a recruitment issue in accounting. Don’t wait for it to pass, be more attractive to work for.

10.    The vast majority of accountants and bookkeepers are good, competent professionals. The vast minority are commercially ambitious. This makes the competition easy to beat.

To your success
