How Is the Accounting Profession Really Seen?

I received an enquiry last week from a young professional who builds websites and is looking to specialise in accounting websites.

“Why accounting websites?” I asked.

Because they don’t take cyber security seriously and I can really help them, came the reply.

What followed was an exchange of views on how the accounting profession is perceived.

When we were finished, they sent me an email of what they felt they’d learned.

Here was their summary:

  1. People who sell to accountants make it sound like everything is evolving, but it’s not really, at least not at the pace suggested.
  2. Most of the information on an accountant’s website should have nothing to do with accounting itself. It should be about the business owners they want to work with.
  3. People buy from people. In accounting, this is true. It’s not just a mantra most marketers talk about.
  4. Accounting is a profession, not an industry. The software providers are the industry.
  5. Perfecting design is not going to work with accountants. They would rather have something where they fill in a form/answer a few questions and get a website in just a few clicks.
  6. Accountants are not overly interested in cybersecurity until their site is hacked.

What would you agree and/or disagree with in the above?

To your success,
