When is an accountant not an accountant?
When they decide to be a business owner rather than a practice owner.
What’s the difference?
A practice owner sets up, wins business by referral, prices keenly and then when they’ve got too much work, they hire someone to help.
Ultimately this practice grows by organically rather than deliberately and the practice owner spends their career constantly chasing deadlines, maximising recoverable hours and creating capacity.
A business owner sets up, wins business by dedicated marketing and business development disciplines (which become departments) prices based on the value they create for their clients and systemise their business so that there’s always room for more.
Ultimately this business grows deliberately rather than accidently, and the business owner spends their career creating more and more impact for their clients, earning more and more money as a result.
I’ve seen two generations choose the first scenario and retire and even pass away, having not enjoyed vast swathes of their career.
The third generation (you) have the technology, knowledge and support to be either.
Which model are you now and which do you want to be?
To your success,
Martin Bissett
